Keep your tip rounded

A tip that has gone flat or hard causes miscues. Keep it rounded, about the curve of a small coin.

Why it matters

A flat tip touches the cue ball with its edge when you use spin, and it slides off. A rounded tip keeps the contact in the middle of the leather. A tip that is hard and shiny also holds chalk badly.

How to do it

  1. 1

Look at the tip from the side. It should be a smooth dome, not flat.

  2. 2

If it is flat or shiny, use a tip shaper or fine sandpaper to round it gently.

  3. 3

Work from the edge towards the centre, and take off very little.

  4. 4

Chalk it, then test it with a few spin shots.

Common mistake

Sanding too much

Tips wear out fast if you shape them every day. Shape the tip only when you see a flat spot, or when you miscue with fresh chalk.

Spin test

Chalk your tip and play 10 shots with side spin, about half a tip from the centre. If you miscue more than once, check the shape of your tip.
