Why it matters
Chalk gives the leather tip grip on the cue ball. Without it the tip can slide off the ball when you hit away from the centre — a miscue. Fresh chalk on every shot keeps your spin shots predictable.
How to do it
- 1
Hold the chalk at the edge of the tip and brush it across with two or three light strokes.
- 2
Turn the cue a little and repeat so the whole tip is covered, right to the edge.
- 3
Look at the tip: you want a thin, even blue layer — no bare leather showing.
Common mistake
Grinding the chalk
Twisting the cube on the tip like a screwdriver wears a hole in the chalk and leaves the edge of the tip bare. Brush, don’t grind.
Try it tonight
Chalk before every shot for one whole rack.
Count your miscues and compare with a normal rack. Then try the Stop · stun · draw drill with fresh chalk each time.
