Table care
A few minutes after each session keeps the cloth fast, the balls clean and the table true for years.
The routine
After every session
- Brush the cloth in straight strokes from the head to the foot, then along the cushions.
- Put the balls away and the cover on.
- Wipe chalk marks off the rails with a dry cloth.
Every week or two
- Vacuum the cloth with a soft brush head on low power. Never rub hard.
- Clean the balls: warm water with a drop of mild soap, then dry with a microfibre cloth. Or use a ball cleaner.
Every few months
- Check the table is still level in both directions.
- Look at the pockets and cushions for loose or worn parts.
Every few years
- Re-cloth when it’s worn, pilled or has burns from the balls. Heavy use means sooner.
- If balls bounce dead or low off a cushion, the rubber needs replacing.
Do and don’t
Do
- Chalk away from the table, so dust doesn’t fall on the cloth.
- Blot spills straight away with a dry cloth, then a little cold water. Dab, don’t rub.
- Keep the room at a steady temperature and humidity.
- Have a fitter move and re-level the table.
Don’t
- Sit or lean on the table, or put drinks on the rails.
- Brush in circles: it pulls and pills the cloth.
- Put balls in the dishwasher or clean them with strong chemicals.
- Leave the table in direct sunlight, which fades the cloth.
Looking after your cue
- Wipe the shaft with a dry cloth after playing to remove chalk and sweat.
- Shape and scuff the tip when it gets flat or shiny.
- Store the cue in its case or upright in a rack, never leaning against a wall or in a hot car.
